Plastic Vs Wooden Chopping Boards
Which is the better option when buying a chopping board for your home?
It’s that time of year again; Plastic Free July and it has us thinking about how we can be more environmentally conscious in our day to day lives. There’s an abundance of ways to care more for the planet in our daily routine and most importantly when it comes to buying new products for our homes. Gone are the days of single use items and fast fashion! Living plastic free involves picking products that are sustainable, eco friendly and will stand the test of time.
A lot of customers have asked us what the differences are between plastic and wooden cutting boards and especially what the benefits of using a timber board are.
Contrary to popular belief, plastic cutting boards are not automatically more food-safe than wood. It’s assumed that because wood is a porous surface and plastic isn’t, plastic boards are more resistant to bacteria. However, this doesn’t take into account the scars a plastic cutting board will get from daily use letting harmful toxins and bacteria in. So, in essence, wooden boards are actually a lot more sanitary in the long run.
The stacks of benefits of choosing a wooden board include:
- Antibacterial Timber
All of the timber we use is naturally antibacterial however Camphor Laurel tests really well in regards to not giving bacteria a good home. We have been crafting boards since 1998 and we still get a lot people saying they have an original from then. Our boards are really durable, well-made and a lot of love goes into creating them. However, we do recommend it is worth considering replacing wooden chopping boards around the 10 year mark.
- Sustainable
The timber we use is all sourced from around Byron Bay and this hugely helps the growth of local, native vegetation. The timber varies in how it looks due to exactly where the tree was growing, how much rain the tree soaked up and how much beautiful Byron sunshine it absorbed as it grew.
- No Warping or Cracking
All our Eco Food Boards are kiln dried right here on our farm. This means the timber is very stable and shouldn’t suffer from any warping or cracking. Our boards are also made from one piece of timber, not joined pieces. This also means cracking would be highly unlikely.
- Chop Chop!
There’s no avoiding it! Knife scratches will happen…but the Camphor Laurel timber is medium density and heavy duty so it really does wear well.
Caring for your Eco Food Board is easy and ensures that your unique piece of timber will have years and years of use. On purchase, we’ll also include a little Care Card with each board so you don’t forget how to show the love your wooden chopping board deserves!
